What is Guayusa?
Guayusa (“gwhy-yoo-sa”) is the caffeinated leaf of a holly tree native to the Amazon rainforests of Ecuador. When brewed, it creates a deliciously smooth tea that has similar levels of caffeine to coffee, but without the jittery side effects – or the crash. This is thanks to guayusa’s unique balance of slow-release caffeine with L-theanine (the active ingredient in matcha tea) and Theobromine (said to be responsible for the pleasant feeling you get from eating dark chocolate).
The combination of these three together creates a uniquely focused energy that is the perfect accompaniment to long hours of work, study, or sport.
Guayusa also has many other health benefits: it is packed with more antioxidants than green tea, has a healthy dose of chlorogenic acids (good for the heart), and is low in tannins (won’t prevent iron absorption and won’t upset your stomach).
The Story of Guayusa
For centuries, the Kichwa people of the Ecuadorian Amazon have begun their day by gathering together as a community to drink guayusa tea. Now, they are sharing this incredible leaf with the rest of the world, in a way that is helping to protect their environment and providing them with a new source of income.
Guayusa is grown under the canopy of the rainforest, which means that as the demand for it grows, so does the incentive to preserve the rainforest and the incredible biodiversity that exists within it.
To ensure a fair wage for farmers, we at Nú Infusions are also committed to only sourcing from guayusa suppliers that pay farmers at least 15% above the Fairtrade minimum.
